1197. 'Ikrimah narrated that Ibn 'Abbās was informed of the death of someone — one of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ. So he fell into prostration. He was asked: "Do you prostrate at this time?" He replied: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'When you witness a sign, prostrate,' and what sign is more grave than the departure of the wives of the Prophet ﷺ?" (Hasan)
1197 - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ أَبِي صَفْوَانَ الثَّقَفِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ كَثِيرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَلْمُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنِ الْحَكَمِ بْنِ أَبَانَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، قَالَ: قِيلَ لِابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ: مَاتَتْ فُلَانَةُ - بَعْضُ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - فَخَرَّ سَاجِدًا، فَقِيلَ لَهُ: أَتَسْجُدُ هَذِهِ السَّاعَةَ؟ فَقَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «إِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ آيَةً فَاسْجُدُوا»، وَأَيُّ آيَةٍ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ ذَهَابِ أَزْوَاجِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ؟

The death of a close relative or a virtuous person is a big loss. In the event of such a catastrophe, people should turn to Allāh and remember Him.
