English translation

1647. It was reported from Ibn As-Sāʿidī, that he said: "Umar put me in charge of (collecting) the charity. After I had completed (my responsibility), he commanded that I be given some wages. I said: 'Indeed, I only did this for the sake of Allāh, and (I expect) my rewards with Allāh!' So he replied: 'Take what I have given you, for I worked during the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and he gave me my wages, and I said just as you have said, but the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "If you are ever given anything without having asked for it, then consume of it, and give charity (from it)." (Ṣaḥīḥ)
