1655. Anas narrated that the Prophet ﷺ was once presented with some meat (to eat). He asked: “What is this?” They said: “Something that was given to Barirah in charity.” So he said: “It is charity for her, but a gift for us.” (Sahih)

Commentary

The inference from the Hadith is that a person receiving charity becomes owner of the charity and, therefore, has the right to dispense with it as he likes. He may give it in charity in turn or as a gift to others.
