English translation

221. 'Abdullāh bin 'Umar reported that 'Umar bin Al-Khaṭṭāb mentioned to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ that he sometimes becomes sexually impure at night (so what should he do?) The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: "Perform Wudū', wash your private part, and then go to sleep." (Saḥīh)

221 - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ، أَنَّهُ قَالَ: ذَكَرَ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ لِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: أَنَّهُ تُصِيبُهُ الْجَنَابَةُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «تَوَضَّأْ وَاغْسِلْ ذَكَرَكَ، ثُمَّ نَمْ»

Commentary

"Perform Wudū', wash your private part," does not indicate a sequence of actions. One should rather wash one's genitals first and then perform Wudū'.
