English translation
2342. It was reported from Ibn 'Umar, who said: "The people gathered to sight the crescent. I informed the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ that I had seen it. He fasted and ordered the people to fast." (Sahih)

2342 - حَدَّثَنَا مَحْمُودُ بْنُ خَالِدٍ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ السَّمْرَقَنْدِيُّ، وَأَنَا لِحَدِيثِهِ، أَتْقَنُ قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا مَرْوَانُ هُوَ ابْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ وَهْبٍ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ قَالَ: «تَرَائِى النَّاسُ الْهِلَالَ،» فَأَخْبَرْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، أَنِّي رَأَيْتُهُ فَصَامَهُ، وَأَمَرَ النَّاسَ بِصِيَامِهِ "
