English translation

2463. Ubayy bin Ka'b said: "The Prophet ﷺ used to observe I'tikāf in the last ten of Ramaḍān, then he did not observe it for a year, when the next year came, he observed it for twenty nights." (Saḥīh)

Arabic text

2463 - حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادٌ، أَخْبَرَنَا ثَابِتٌ، عَنْ أَبِي رَافِعٍ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ، «أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الْأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ، فَلَمْ يَعْتَكِفْ عَامًا، فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِي الْعَامِ الْمُقْبِلِ اعْتَكَفَ عِشْرِينَ لَيْلَةً»

Commentary

It is not compulsory to make up for the intended voluntary actions. There is, however, much reward for redeeming such acts. The Prophet ﷺ was himself very particular about it.
