3693. It was narrated from Abū Hurairah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said to the delegation of 'Abdul-Qais: "I forbid you from An-Naqīr, Al-Muqayyar, Al-Hantam, Ad-Dubbā, and skins cut from the top; rather drink from a skin then tie it (with a string)." (Ṣaḥīh)
3693 - حَدَّثَنَا وَهْبُ بْنُ بَقِيَّةَ، عَنْ نُوحِ بْنِ قَيْسٍ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَوْنٍ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ لِوَفْدِ عَبْدِ الْقَيْسِ: «أَنْهَاكُمْ عَنِ النَّقِيرِ وَالْمُقَيَّرِ، وَالْحَنْتَمِ، وَالدُّبَّاءِ، وَالْمُزَادَةِ الْمَجْبُوبَةِ وَلَكِنِ اشْرَبْ فِي سِقَائِكَ وَأَوْكِهْ»

Binding its opening with a string serves many purposes, and one of them is that if the drink begins to ferment, the leather container will swell indicating that.
