Text and translation

English translation

4188. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbâs said: "The People of the Book used to let their hair hang down, and the idolaters used to part their hair. The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ liked to act in accordance with the People of the Book in matters concerning which there was no command, so the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ used to let his hair hang down, then later on, he parted it.” (Saḥīh)

Commentary

The implication is that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ was ordered to part after being allowed not to.
