English translation

823. It was reported from Muḥammad bin Salamah, from Muḥammad bin Ishāq, from Makḥūl, from Maḥmūd bin Ar-Rabi' from 'Ubādah bin Aṣ-Ṣāmit, who said: "We were (standing) behind the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ in the Fajr prayer. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ recited (the Qur'ān), but found it difficult to recite (due to interference). When he completed (the prayer) he said: 'Perhaps you recite behind your Imām?' We said: 'Yes, rapidly, O Messenger of Allāh.' So he said: 'Do not do so, except with Fātiḥatil-Kitāb, for there is no prayer for one who does not recite it.'" (Sāhīh)

823 - حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ النُّفَيْلِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ مَحْمُودِ بْنِ الرَّبِيعِ، عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، قَالَ: كُنَّا خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي صَلَاةِ الْفَجْرِ فَقَرَأَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَثَقُلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الْقِرَاءَةُ، فَلَمَّا فَرَغَ قَالَ: «لَعَلَّكُمْ تَقْرَءُونَ خَلْفَ إِمَامِكُمْ» قُلْنَا: نَعَمْ هَذًّا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، قَالَ: «لَا تَفْعَلُوا إِلَّا بِفَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ فَإِنَّهُ لَا صَلَاةَ لِمَنْ لَمْ يَقْرَأْ بِهَا»
