Text and translation

English translation

956. It was reported from Kahmas bin Al-Ḥasan, from 'Abdullāh bin Shāqīq, who said: "I asked 'Aishah: 'Would the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ recite [Sūrahs][1] in one Rak'ah?' She replied: '(Yes, from the) Muṣṣal.' So I asked: 'Would he pray sitting down?' She replied: ‘After the people made him old.’”(Sahīh)

956 - حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ، حَدَّثَنَا كَهْمَسُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ، قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عَائِشَةَ، أَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقْرَأُ السُّورَةَ فِي رَكْعَةٍ؟ قَالَتْ: «الْمُفَصَّلَ»، قَالَ: قُلْتُ: فَكَانَ يُصَلِّي قَاعِدًا؟ قَالَتْ: «حِينَ حَطَمَهُ النَّاسُ»

Commentary

1. It is not proper to offer a prayer while sitting without a reasonable excuse. 2. It is permissible to recite more than one Sūrah of the Qur’ān in one Rak’ah of a prayer.
