English translation

1678. ‘Umar bin Al-Khaṭṭāb (may Allāh be pleased with him) said: "One day, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ commanded us to give charity. It so happened that I had wealth at that time, so I said to myself: 'If I will beat Abū Bakr (in my good deeds) any day, then it will be today!' So I brought half of my wealth, and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ asked me: 'How much have you left for your family?' I said: 'An equivalent amount.' But then Abū Bakr came with all of his wealth, so the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ asked him: 'What have you left for your family?' He replied: 'I have left for them Allāh and His Messenger.' So I said: 'I will never be able to beat you in anything!'" (Hasan)

1678 - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ، وَعُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، وَهَذَا حَدِيثُهُ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ دُكَيْنٍ، حَدَّثَنَا هِشَامُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَسْلَمَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ عُمَرَ بْنَ الْخَطَّابِ، رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ يَقُولُ: " أَمَرَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَوْمًا أَنْ نَتَصَدَّقَ، فَوَافَقَ ذَلِكَ مَالًا عِنْدِي، فَقُلْتُ: الْيَوْمَ أَسْبِقُ أَبَا بَكْرٍ إِنْ سَبَقْتُهُ يَوْمًا، فَجِئْتُ بِنِصْفِ مَالِي، فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا أَبْقَيْتَ لِأَهْلِكَ؟»، قُلْتُ: مِثْلَهُ، قَالَ: وَأَتَى أَبُو بَكْرٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِكُلِّ مَا عِنْدَهُ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَا أَبْقَيْتَ لِأَهْلِكَ؟» قَالَ: أَبْقَيْتُ لَهُمُ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ، قُلْتُ: لَا أُسَابِقُكَ إِلَى شَيْءٍ أَبَدًا

Commentary

Giving away all the possessions in charity is permissible only for those who trust in Allāh and fear not the destitution and penury following it. As for common men, the rule is the same as mentioned in Hadīth no. 1676.
