English translation

3208. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbãs, may Allah be pleased with him, said: "The Messenger of Allah () said: 'The Lahd is for us and the ditch is for others." (Da'iJ)

Arabic text

3208 - حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَكَّامُ بْنُ سَلْمٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْأَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «اللَّحْدُ لَنَا وَالشَّقُّ لِغَيْرِنَا»

Commentary

The Lahd is a niche, it is made by first digging a ditch and then excavating a horizontal area to act like a shelf on the side of that ditch, to insert the deceased. If there is no niche or shelf, it is referred to as a Shaaq or ditch.
