English translation

3447. It was narrated from Muḥammad bin ‘Amr bin ‘Aṭā’, from Sa‘eed bin Al-Musayyab, from Ma‘mar bin Abī Ma‘mar, one of Banū ‘Adiyy bin Ka‘b, who said: “The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: ‘No one hoards but (is) a sinner.’” I said to Sa‘eed: “You hoard.” He said: “And Ma‘mar used to hoard.” (Sahīh) Abū Dāwūd said: I asked Aḥmad: “What is (the prohibited type of) hoarding?” He said: “(Hoarding) things that are essential to people’s survival.” Abū Dāwūd said: Al-Awzā'ī said: "The hoarder is the one who frequents the market and buys food that people need, for the purpose of hoarding."
