3647. It was narrated that Al-Muṭṭalib bin ‘Abdullāh bin Hanṭab said: “Zaid bin Thābit entered upon Mu‘āwiyah and asked him about a Hadīth, and he ordered someone to write it down. Zaid said to him: ‘The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ told us not to write down any of his Hadīth.’ So he erased it.” (Da’if)

Commentary
It is proven through many authentic narrations that the Companions would write narrations. Scholars have explained that in the early period of Islam, they was not allowed to write narrations, so that people may not become confused about what was the Qur’ān, and what was other than that. But when the Companions learned the Qur’ān, and learned the Sunnah, there was no fear of such confusion with the proliferation of knowledge.
