English translation

3753. It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbās said: “O you who believe! Eat not up your property among yourselves unjustly except it be a trade amongst you, by mutual consent.””[1] People felt that it was not right to eat in the houses of others after this Verse was revealed. But that was abrogated by the Verse that is in (Sūrat An-Nūr, where Allāh says: 'There is no sin upon you if you eat from your houses... up to His saying: apart.'[1] A rich man would invite his family to a meal and say: 'I do not feel at ease eating from it.' And he would say: 'The poor man is more entitled to it than me.' And it was made permissible to them to eat from that over which the Name of Allāh has been mentioned, and the food of the people of the Book was made permissible." (Hasan)
