English translation

4962. It was narrated that 'Āmir said: Jubairah bin Aḍ-Ḍahhāk said: "This Verse – 'Nor insult one another by nicknames. How bad is it to insult one's brother after having faith[1] – was revealed concerning us, Banū Salamah. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ came to us, and there was no man among us who did not have two or three names. Every time the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ started to say: 'O so-and-so,' they would say: 'Don't say that, O Messenger of Allāh, for he gets angry with this name.' Then this Verse was revealed: 'Nor insult one another by nicknames...'" (Ṣaḥīḥ)
