English translation

Allāh's Messenger ﷺ said, "There are three types of people whom Allāh will neither speak to them nor look at them nor purify men. And if there are not two men (available), then a man and two women, such as you agree for witnesses, so that if one of them (two women) errs, the other can remind her...)” (V.2:282) I added, “If one witness and the oath of the plaintiff were sufficient, there would be no need for one of the two women to remind the other.”

Footnotes

  1. 1

    (1) (H. 2671) Literally, Li'an means cursing, legally it means an oath by which a husband claims that his wife has committed illegal sexual intercourse. The wife in her turn denies the accusation and takes a similar oath. In both oaths Allāh is invoked to curse the liar. The case ends with divorce but no punishment is imposed on any of the two because there are no witnesses to confirm the accusation.
