7490. Narrated Ibn 'Abbās رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا (regarding the Verse): "...And offer your Salāt (prayer) neither aloud nor in a low voice..." (V.17:110) This Verse was revealed while Allāh's Messenger ﷺ was hiding himself in Makkah, and when he raised his voice while reciting the Qur'ān, Al-Mushrikūn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers in the Oneness of Allāh and in His Messenger Muḥammad ﷺ) would hear him and abuse the Qur'ān and its Revealer and to the one who brought it. So Allāh تعالى said: “...And offer your Salāt (prayer) neither aloud nor in a low voice...” (V.17:110) That is, ‘Do not say your Salāt (prayer) so loudly that Al-Mushrikūn should hear you, nor say it in such a low tone that your companions do not hear you.’ But seek a middle course between those (extremes), i.e., let your companions hear, so that they may learn it from you, and do not recite it (the Qur'ān) loudly (so that Al-Mushrikūn should hear it and abuse it, etc.).
