Allāh’s Messenger ﷺ ordered (the Muslims) to observe Saum (fast) on the day of ‘Āshūra’, and when fasting in the month of Ramaḍān was prescribed, it became optional for one to observe Saum (fast) on that day (‘Āshūra’) or not.
