English translation

2553. Narrated Ibn 'Umar رضي الله عنهما: The Prophet ﷺ said, "If one manumits his (1) (Ch. 17) This chapter recommends that one should not call his slave a slave; yet the word is used by Allāh and His Messenger on many occasions. In this chapter the male slave is called Abd in Arabic; the female slave Ama; the master Saiyid; or Rabb. The slave is also called Mamlūk, and the female slave Fatāt. share of a common slave ('Abd'), and he has money sufficient to free the remaining portion of the price of the slave (justly estimated), then he should free the slave completely by paying the rest of his price; otherwise the slave is freed partly."
