3489. Narrated Ibn 'Abbās رضي الله عنهما regarding the Verse: 'And (We) made you Shu'ūba (nations) and Qabā'il (tribes) that you may know one another...' (V.49:13) That Shu'ūba means the big Qabā'il (i.e., nations) while the Qabā'il (i.e., tribes) means the branch tribes.
3489 - حَدَّثَنَا خَالِدُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الكَاهِلِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي حَصِينٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا، {وَجَعَلْنَاكُمْ شُعُوبًا وَقَبَائِلَ لِتَعَارَفُوا} [الحجرات: 13]، قَالَ: " الشُّعُوبُ: القَبَائِلُ العِظَامُ، وَالقَبَائِلُ: البُطُونُ "
