If a Dhimmī or somebody else abuses the Prophet ﷺ by playing upon words but not frankly, e.g., by saying, "As-Sāmu 'Alaika."

English translation

A group of Jews asked permission to visit the Prophet ﷺ (and when they were admitted) they said, "As-Sāmu 'Alaika (death be upon you)." I said (to them), "Nay! Death and the curse of Allāh be upon you!" The Prophet ﷺ said, "O 'Āishah! Allāh is Kind and Lenient and likes that one should be kind and lenient in all matters." I said, "Haven't you heard what they said?" He said, "I said (to them), 'Wa 'Alaikum (and upon you).'"

Footnotes

  1. 1

    (1) (H.6926) 'As-Sāmu 'Alaika' means, 'Death be upon you'. Notice its similarity to the greeting, 'As-Salāmu 'Alaika' (Peace be upon you). 'Wa 'Alaika' or 'Wa 'Alaikum' means: 'And upon you.'
