English translation

1053. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbās said: "I was with the Prophet ﷺ, and a man came to him and said: 'Last night while I was sleeping, I saw that I was praying towards the base of a tree. I recited (an Āyah of) prostration and prostrated, and the tree prostrated when I did, and I heard it saying: Allāhummah-tut anni biha wizran, waktub li bihā ajran, waj'al-hā li 'indaka dhukhran (O Allāh, reduce my burden of sin thereby, reward me for it and store it for me with You).’ Ibn ‘Abbās said: “I saw the Prophet ﷺ recite (an Āyah of) prostration and then prostrate, and I heard him saying in his prostration something like that which the man had told him the tree said.” (Hasan)

Commentary

The Companion referred to in the Hadith was Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri ﷺ as mentioned in another Hadith (See Tuhfatul-Ahrawdhi 160/3, H. 579). It is Sunnah to recite the abovementioned invocation in prostrations for reciting the Qur'an. Matters in the Islamic Shari'ah are not proved from dreams. The invocation is a part of Sunnah not because one of the Companions saw it in a dream, but because it is proved from the practice of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ.
