1073. It was narrated that 'Abdur-Rahmân bin Humaid Az-Zuhri said: "I asked Sâ'ib bin Yazid: 'What have you heard about staying in Makkah?' He said: 'I heard 'Ala' bin Hadrami say: "The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Three (days) for the Muhâjir after departing (from Mina).'"[1] (Sahih)

Commentary
It has been deduced from it, that staying beyond three days at a place makes a traveling person like a resident. The Emigrants were not permitted to take their residence once again in Makkah, so that that they continue to merit the reward of Emigration. The Prophet ﷺ permitted them to stay there up to three days. It means a stay of three days does not give one the status of a resident. As such, if a traveler stays up to three days at a place, he may perform the shortened prayer. Some other scholars, however, base their opinion on the text of the next Hadith, and extend the period for shortened ﷺ to four days.
