English translation
1320. It was narrated that Ibn 'Umar said: "The Prophet ﷺ was asked about the night prayer. He said: Pray two by two, and if you fear that dawn is coming, then perform Witr with one Rak'ah." (Sahih)

1320 - حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ أَبِي سَهْلٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَالِمٍ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَعَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، وَعَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي لَبِيدٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، وَعَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ دِينَارٍ، عَنْ طَاوُسٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَنْ صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ فَقَالَ: «يُصَلِّي مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خَافَ الصُّبْحَ أَوْتَرَ بِوَاحِدَةٍ»

Commentary
The number of Rak'ah in Tahajjud prayers could as well be fewer than eight. Witr must have been performed before the onset of the true dawn. Witr could even be of one Rak'ah.
