English translation

1321. It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbās said: "The Prophet ﷺ used to pray the night prayer two Rak'ah by two Rak'ah." (Da'if)

Arabic text

1321 - حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ وَكِيعٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَثَّامُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُصَلِّي بِاللَّيْلِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ» بَابُ مَا جَاءَ فِي صَلَاةِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ مَثْنَى مَثْنَى

Commentary

Nafl (voluntary) prayer should no doubt be performed in units of two Rak'ah each. It is also, however, allowed to pray it in units of four each.
