English translation

1499. It was narrated that Wâthilah bin Asqa' said: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ offered the funeral prayer for a man among the Muslims and I heard him say: 'O Allâh, so-and-so the son of so-and-so is in Your care and under Your protection. Protect him from the trial of the grave and the torment of the Fire, for You are the One Who keeps the promise and You are the Truth. Forgive him and have mercy on him, for You are the Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (Hasan)

Commentary

The punishment of grave is true. That is why the Noble Prophet ﷺ sought refuge for the deceased from the punishment of the grave, but this is a matter of the Unseen world. The punishment in the grave is also inflicted for sins other than disbelief and polytheism, for example, not protecting the body and clothes from urine and backbiting.
