English translation

1565. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ offered the funeral prayer, then he came to the grave of the deceased and scattered three handfuls of earth from the side of (the deceased's) head. (Hasan)

Arabic text

1565 - حَدَّثَنَا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ الدِّمَشْقِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ صَالِحٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا سَلَمَةُ بْنُ كُلْثُومٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ، عَنْ يَحْيَى بْنِ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ، عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، «صَلَّى عَلَى جِنَازَةٍ، ثُمَّ أَتَى قَبْرَ الْمَيِّتِ، فَحَثَى عَلَيْهِ مِنْ قِبَلِ رَأْسِهِ ثَلَاثًا»

Commentary

'Handful' in this Hadith means a handful of both hands together. One should not understand that it means a handful of a single hand, it is not what is meant in this Hadith.
