English translation

161. It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said: 'Do not revile my Companions, for by the One in Whose Hand is my soul! If any one of you were to spend the equivalent of Mount Uhud in gold, it would not equal a Mudd[1] spent by anyone of them, nor even half a Mudd.'" (Sahih)

Commentary

a. The Hadith is addressed to all those Muslims who come after the Companions. Even a vastly meritorious act of the late day Muslims would not, before Allāh, equal a seemingly petty act done by the Companions. b. The reason why the deeds done by the Companions rank so high, is simply this that they made their sacrifices at a time when Islam was just laying its foundations.
