English translation

1623. It was narrated that 'Aishah said: "I saw the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ when he was dying, and there was a bowl of water next to him. He put his hand in the vessel and wiped his face with the water, and said: 'O Allāh, help me to bear the agonies of death.'" (Hasan)

Commentary

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ wiped his wet hand over his face at the last moments of life. The most probable reason for it was that he had an enormously high temperature during the last days. Also for this reason the Prophet ﷺ took a bath four days (at night between Thursday and Friday) prior to passing away so that the heat of temperature would lessen and he would join the congregational prayer, but he was unable to go to the mosque due to the severe weakness.
