Commentary

A new Muslim who, in a state of disbelief, had a habit of swearing by other than Allāh, might utter these polytheistic words because of a previous habit. When he/she realises the mistake, the person should then declare the word of Tauhid 'Lâ ilâha illallâh' (none has the right to be worshiped but Allâh); the wording of Tauhid would be an expiation for the polytheistic words. However a person does not become an apostate because of making a mistake like this.
