English translation

2201. It was narrated that Abu Sa'eed said: "Prices rose at the time of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and they said: 'Why do you not fix the food prices, O Messenger of Allāh?' He said: 'I hope that when I leave you, no one among you will be demanding restitution for a wrong that I have done to him.'" (Sahih)

Commentary

The affairs of trade should operate according to the economic law of demand and consumption, and import and export, which is better for the economy of the country; and the government should avoid interfering in it. If the traders do not take care of the needs of the public, due to the greed of excessive profit, then the government can get rid of the artificial inflation and shortage by providing the food stuff from the official stores for cheaper rates.
