English translation
2583. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said: "May Allâh curse the thief! He steals an egg and his hand is cut off, and he steals a rope and his hand is cut off." (Sahih)

2583 - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَعَنَ اللَّهُ السَّارِقَ. يَسْرِقُ الْبَيْضَةَ فَتُقْطَعُ يَدُهُ، وَيَسْرِقُ الْحَبْلَ فَتُقْطَعُ يَدُهُ»

Commentary
This narration means that when a thief steals minor things like an egg or a rope and remains uncaught, he is encouraged to steal more precious things. The punishment of cutting off the thief's hand is given in the Noble Qur'an. (See Al-Ma'idah 5: 38)
