Text and translation

English translation

2733. It was narrated from 'Aishah that the freed slave of the Prophet ﷺ fell from a palm tree and died. He left behind wealth but he had no child or close relative. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Give his legacy to a man from his village." (Hasan)

Commentary

The Noble Prophet ﷺ was the heir to this man. He did not like to take the belongings of the slave, and ordered to distribute his property among his people. One who has no heir, his property is deposited in the public treasury which can be used for the common benefits of the Muslim community. In the absence of a public treasury, the legacy of a slave having no heirs goes to the people of his town.
