It was narrated that Mu'awiyah bin Jâhimah As-Sulami said: "I came to the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allâh, I want to go for Jihâd with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allâh and the Hereafter.' He said: 'Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Go back and honor her.' Then I approached him from the other side and said: 'O Messenger of Allâh, I want to go for Jihâd with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allâh and the Hereafter.' He said: 'Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Go back and honor her.' Then I approached him from in front and said: 'O Messenger of Allâh, I want to go for Jihâd with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allâh and the Hereafter.' He said: 'Woe to you! Is your mother still alive?' I said: 'Yes.' He said: 'Go back and serve her, for there is Paradise.'" (Sahih)

Commentary
In normal cases, Jihâd is a collective compulsory duty. So, some people may remain behind.
If there is no other son who can take care of the parents, then serving them is more important than going for Jihâd.
Just as one gets the reward of Paradise for Jihâd, similarly one gets the reward of Paradise for serving them.
Being in the service of one's mother is more important than the service of his father; even though staying away from displeasing his father is also compulsory.
