English translation

2808. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbâs that the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ acquired his sword Dhulfiqâr, from the spoils of war on the Day of Badr. (Hasan)

Arabic text

2808 - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ الصَّلْتِ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي الزِّنَادِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، «أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَنَفَّلَ سَيْفَهُ ذَا الْفَقَارِ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ»

Commentary

This sword was called 'Zulfiqar' since it had deep marks like spinal vertebrae. (An Nihâyah, Ibn Athîr, under the root word Faqr)
