Commentary

Keeping horses and taking care of them for Jihâd requires a lot of expenses. So, a separate share from the booty is granted for a horse; otherwise, the complete share of a fighter would have to be used to cover the expenses of his horse, and nothing is left with him to fulfill his own needs. The share of a horse is twice the share of a man. Hence, the fighter who fights on his horse gets three shares.
