Commentary

'Male and female devils' means the devils among the Jinn, that take pleasure in teasing humans just for fun. The devils, of impure disposition as they are, only like unclean places. That is why they frequent the toilets. The supplication quoted above must be recited before entering the washroom or lavatory. (See Bukhārī: 142.) It is against the rules of decency to articulate supplications inside the lavatory with the tongue. In case a person is going to relieve himself in an open field, let him pronounce the supplication before undressing himself.
