3173. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbās: "And certainly, the Shayâtin (devils) do inspire their friends (from mankind)."[1] He said: "They used to say: 'Whatever the Name of Allāh has been mentioned over, do not eat it, and whatever the Name of Allāh has not been mentioned over, eat it.' Then Allāh said: "Eat not of that over which Allāh's Name has not been pronounced."[2] (Da'if)

Commentary
a. A narration reads that the reason of revelation of the Verse is that the polytheists used to say that Muslims eat what they kill (slaughtered animal), while they do not eat what is killed by Allāh (dead animal). Then Allāh revealed the above Verse and advised the Muslims to keep away from the doubts raised by non-Muslims. He said: "And if you were to obey them, indeed, you would be associators (of others with Him)." (Surat Al-An'ām 6: 121) [Jāmi' At-Tirmidhī: 3069]
b. Mentioning Allāh's Name at the time of slaughtering is compulsory.
