English translation
3187. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbās that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'Do not take anything with a soul as a target.' (Sahih)

3187 - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ح وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ خَلَّادٍ الْبَاهِلِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ مَهْدِيٍّ، قَالَا حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنْ سِمَاكٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَا تَتَّخِذُوا شَيْئًا، فِيهِ الرُّوحُ، غَرَضًا»

Commentary
a. The reason for this prohibition is that this is nothing but an act or cruelty against animals without any justification, and it is contrary to the kind character of a Muslim. b. Killing an animal instead of slaughtering it makes it a dead animal, which is a way of wasting food, so it is a sin.
