English translation

3371. It was narrated that Abu Dardā' said: "My close friend ﷺ advised me: 'Do not drink wine, for it is the key to all evils.'" (Hasan)

Arabic text

3371 - حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْمَرْوَزِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي عَدِيٍّ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الْجَوْهَرِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَهَّابِ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ رَاشِدٍ أَبِي مُحَمَّدٍ الْحِمَّانِيِّ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ، عَنْ أُمِّ الدَّرْدَاءِ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّرْدَاءِ، قَالَ: أَوْصَانِي خَلِيلِي صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «لَا تَشْرَبِ الْخَمْرَ، فَإِنَّهَا مِفْتَاحُ كُلِّ شَرٍّ»

Commentary

Khamr (wine) means every drink that causes drunkenness. (See Hadith: 3390) A human being, because of his intellect, keeps himself away from every sin and harmful saying or action. After using intoxicants, he loses his mind and good sense. Hence, he can not differentiate between good and bad, and in this condition he is prone to commit any sin.
