3993. It was narrated from Anas bin Mālik that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: 'The Children of Israel split into seventy-one sects, and my nation will split into seventy-two, all of which will be in Hell apart from one, which is the main body.' (Sahih)

Commentary

The 'main body' of Muslims is the one who follows the method of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. After that, people formed other groups and sects, separating from the main body, but the 'main body' has always been continuous. Muslims are ordered to be with this main body and follow them. b. Due to the whims or misinterpretation of the texts of the Shari'ah many people separated from the main body. Those who did not agree with them adhered firmly to the Qur'an and Sunnah which is the correct way. c. Salvation does not depend on giving a certain name to one's party, rather it depends on following the teachings of the Qur'an and Sunnah.
