Commentary

The Hadith means that just like we wipe the head, we must also wipe the ears. The ears are not to be washed like the face. Therefore, while washing the face the ears must not be washed. The water taken for wiping the head should also be used for the wiping of the ears. No additional water needs to be taken for wiping the ears.
