English translation

735. It was narrated that 'Umar bin Khattāb said: "I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: 'Whoever builds a mosque in which the Name of Allāh is mentioned, Allāh will build a house for him in Paradise.'" (Sahih)

735 - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا لَيْثُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْجَعْفَرِيُّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ مُحَمَّدٍ جَمِيعًا، عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أُسَامَةَ بْنِ الْهَادِ، عَنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ أَبِي الْوَلِيدِ، عَنْ عُثْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سُرَاقَةَ الْعَدَوِيِّ، عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ الْخَطَّابِ، قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «مَنْ بَنَى مَسْجِدًا يُذْكَرُ فِيهِ اسْمُ اللَّهُ، بَنَى اللَّهُ لَهُ بَيْتًا فِي الْجَنَّةِ»

Commentary

'Mentioning the Name of Allāh' means not only the performance of prayer, but also other devotional acts, such as the recitation of prophetic supplications and other texts containing the remembrance of Allāh, and the glorification of His majesty. It also includes giving admonitions, delivering the message of Islam, as well as the learning and teaching of the tenets of Islam. It is great tiding for anyone who participates in the building of a mosque that, as a reward for it, Allāh will build a house for him in Paradise. This amounts to a Divine promise that such a person shall certainly be admitted to Paradise.
