838. It was narrated from Abu Sâ'ib that he heard Abu Hurairah say: "The Messenger of Allâh ﷺ said: Whoever performs a prayer in which he does not recite Ummul Qur'an (the Mother of the Qur'an, i.e., Al-Fâtiyah), it is deficient; not complete." I said: 'O Abu Hurairah, sometimes I am behind the Imâm. He pressed my forearm and said: 'O Persian! Recite it to yourself.'" (Sahih)
838 - حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ جُرَيْجٍ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ يَعْقُوبَ، أَنَّ أَبَا السَّائِبِ أَخْبَرَهُ، أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ يَقُولُ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ صَلَّى صَلَاةً لَمْ يَقْرَأْ فِيهَا بِأُمِّ الْقُرْآنِ، فَهِيَ خِدَاجٌ غَيْرُ تَمَامٍ» فَقُلْتُ: يَا أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، فَإِنِّي أَكُونُ أَحْيَانًا وَرَاءَ الْإِمَامِ، فَغَمَزَ ذِرَاعِي وَقَالَ: يَا فَارِسِيُّ، اقْرَأْ بِهَا فِي نَفْسِكَ

a. Being 'deficient; not complete' means that a prayer done without it is not complete and we have to redo it. b. 'Recite it to yourself' does not mean to recite it in the heart without uttering it by the tongue, because the term 'reciting' does not apply to it. It only means to recite it in a way that the person next to you does not hear it. This manner of recitation in no way violates the Qur'anic command to 'listen with attention' and 'holding one's peace' (7:204) as the Prophet's clear command (to recite it behind the Imâm) is sometimes suggested to be.
