English translation
1026. It was narrated that Mu'ayqib said: "The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said, concerning smoothing the pebbles during prayer: 'If you must do that, then do it only once.'" (Sahih)

1026 - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ، وَعَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَا: حَدَّثَنَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا الْأَوْزَاعِيُّ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي مُعَيْقِيبٌ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي مَسْحِ الْحَصَى فِي الصَّلَاةِ: «إِنْ كُنْتَ فَاعِلًا فَمَرَّةً وَاحِدَةً»

Commentary
If a person feels during the prayer that the pebbles under him are uneven to the extent that their pricking could be the cause of distraction from prayer, he could try to smooth them once, and no more.
