The normal practice of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ is to start Tahajjud after the middle of the night, and finish it an hour or two before Fajr. That is why at the beginning of true dawn, he would be sleeping. At times, however, as we find mentioned in some of the Ahādīth, he would remain praying until the end of the night. A person is free to perform Tahajjud at any time of the night and as long as he wishes, according to his own convenience.
