1241. Sa'd bin Târiq said: "I said to my father: 'O my father! You prayed behind the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ and behind Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthmân, and behind 'Ali here in Kufah for about five years. Did they recite Qunut in Fajr?' He said: 'O my son! That is an innovation.'" (Sahih)

Commentary
Târiq ﷺ does not say that the Qunut as a rule is Bid'ah (innovation). He only says that reciting the Qunut regularly in the of Fajr prayer is innovation. We gather from this, that sometimes an action in itself is Sunnah, but doing it in the wrong way, or making arbitrary additions or deletions in it, makes it an innovation. In other words, it is the particular manner of doing an that act.
