Text and translation

English translation

1401. It was narrated that 'Ubādah bin Sāmit said: "I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ say: 'Five prayers that Allāh has enjoined upon His slaves, so whoever does them, and does not omit anything out of negligence, on the Day of Resurrection Allāh will make a covenant with him that He will admit him to Paradise. But whoever does them but omits something from them out of negligence, will not have such a covenant with Allāh; if He wills He will punish him, and if He wills, He will forgive him.'" (Hasan)

Commentary

a. Obligatory prayers are just five — the rest are voluntary (Nafl). Some of these Nafl prayers are very much emphasized, others are not. However, there is no permission to be deficient with them, since they serve the purpose of making good the defects left by the people in performing their obligatory prayers. b. 'Omitting something' could either be in the form of completely neglecting them or not performing them with a sense of humility and submissiveness.
