English translation

1560. It was narrated from Hishām bin ‘Āmir that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Dig the grave deep, make it spacious and prepare it well.” (Sahih)

Arabic text

1560 - حَدَّثَنَا أَزْهَرُ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْوَارِثِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَيُّوبُ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ، عَنْ أَبِي الدَّهْمَاءِ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عَامِرٍ، قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «احْفِرُوا، وَأَوْسِعُوا، وَأَحْسِنُوا»

Commentary

The Messenger of Allāh said these words when burying the martyrs from the battle of Uhud. He said: “Dig the graves wide, deep and good. Bury two or three in one grave, putting towards the Qiblah, first the one with the most memorisation and knowledge of Qur’ān.” (Sunan An-Nasā’i: 2013)
